Fingerprinting

Fingerprinting is all about making sure that if you lose your Tortoise, that you have ways to prove that it is yours if someone else finds it. You may think that neighbours will return it to you anyway, but we have found that this does not always happen and can end up in the hands of the police.

Job 1  Take a photo of the Tortoise in your garden, in situ, so that you can see the Tortoise's home and garden area. At least this helps to prove that the photograph is of your garden as well.

this shows your garden with Tortoise                                   this one is not enough on it's own.

Job 2  Take a photo of the Carapace and Plastron which is the most important.

Job 3  You must also keep records of their weights and lengths and any distinguishing marks. These need to be updated, so please record dates also.

If you have photos of your Tortoise in your garden, the carapace and plastron and the weights and measurements of your Tortoise, you have a better chance of proving that the Tortoise is yours.

This will be very useful if you lose your Tortoise, please remember that if you have a juvenile they will grow and grow and the photos need to show this, and so do the records.

Job 4 Keep these records safe, not in the shed with the Tortoise. Yes this has happened and the thieves took the records as well.
