Summer Husbandry
Tortoises cannot raise their body temperature by burning food as mammals
do. During daylight hours in the summer, Mediterranean tortoises try to keep
their bodies at 30°C by basking in the sun's rays. In England the energy
available from the sun is only about a quarter of the optimum required. This
is not enough and must be supplemented. The easiest way to do this is with a
basking lamp.
